Today is the World Environment Day, a wakeup call for all human stakeholders to not just pledge their support but also do their wee bit in their own little ways to pave the way for a greener planet. It is also a stark reminder of the fact that each passing minute is another chance to sculpt a cleaner environment, the best legacy that we can create for the future. This year’s theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future” says it all. The global host for the year 2010 is Rwanda which will lead the celebrations marked by events and conferences.
The World Environment Day is meant to make people more aware of what it takes for this benevolent planet to sustain our needs and what is needed of us to ensure that we don’t exploit natural resources to extinction. On another positive note, things are looking up as far as India’s efforts on the green paradigm are concerned. The Govt seems to have waken up to the harsh realities. The proposed Rs 44,000 crore Green Mission project by the Environment Ministry this year is a harbinger of things to come on the Indian front vis a vis environment conservation and preservation. The project aims to increase total forest cover by 20 million hectares by 2020, part of the overall plan to combat climate change, the new and restored forest areas hopefully acting as a carbon sink. The good thing about the plan is that it is encompassing of the need to protect and enhance existing dense forests in addition restoring the degraded ones. There is also focus on engaging local communities dependent on forest produce which is a much needed step in the right direction.
Is it not time to be a champion for the enviroment?
